The original idea for this short film came from a terrible East Asian custom. In the 1930s, hakka people living in Guangzhou would find a cock to take the place of the groom and hold the wedding ceremony with the bride because the man was working far away from home for a long time and could not get married in his hometown. Wedding rooster selection is also very exquisite.
First, the cock from the hen’s first brood, second, it must be fresh and healthy, and third, the weight of the cock must be the same as the groom’s age. The roosters, once selected, are kept alone in a new cage with a red strip attached and a red paper bearing the word “Lucky Rooster.” Every meal is fed with meat and corn. Until the wedding ceremony, by the groom’s relatives choose a person holding the cock, let it replace the groom and the bride to complete the wedding.
When a bride marries a cock, some brides are lucky enough to have her husband back alive. But there are so many unlucky brides that most of them never meet their husbands before they get married. Some brides are widowed and never remarry because their husbands die away, they even never seen their husband before. Some are married to bring luck to the husband who is seriously ill, hoping that good luck can make the husband recover. However, if the husband dies, the bride will be killed by her husband’s relatives and forced to bury her husband with her. Some when the bride marries, the husband is not born, and after the husband is born, the bride has to raise her husband, and when the husband becomes an adult and marries her husband, the bride has to keep having children until she gives birth to a boy.
These terrible customs made the life and social status of East Asian women in the last century very low and miserable. So we used that as inspiration to create this short film. The original story is set as a bride marrying a dead man, and the film ends in a panic. After constant discussion, we changed the plot into a story in which the girl did not want to marry a dead man, so she killed her husband’s family, even the rooster that completed the wedding on her husband’s behalf. At the beginning of the production, our idea was to use a lot of disconcerting background music and dark colors to create a weird experiment short film, but the effect was not satisfactory and we finally gave up the idea. After constant exploration, we settled on the current version.
In this cooperation project, Yourong is responsible for the scene design and overall editing of the whole story, Elizabeth is responsible for the character design and preliminary writing of the story script, and the soundtrack is jointly completed by us. From content determination to video production, we went through a lot of elaboration and polishing of the story and soundtrack, and completed the first animated short film containing strong horror elements in our life through continuous improvement. Thanks for our mutual tolerance and collision of inspiration.
